Is it Just a Dream?

image

Across the country today, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr Day.  Everyone knows the legacy of the man and his famous “I Have A Dream” speech.   I wonder will the dream ever be realized?  Sure, we have an African-American President (elected twice).  Yet those elections exposed a hidden attitude of mistrust and disrespect that went beyond politics.  Minorities hold positions of power in various occupations that MLK may not have imagined.  Still the news is filled with stories of how people mistreat and kill each other based on misconceptions of someone different from them.

I believe that people should be treated with respect no matter their color, religion or sexual orientation.  We don’t have to agree on everything to get along.  I believe like Dr. King that people should be judged on the content of their character.  I hope we get there someday.

Hell, maybe I’m the one that’s dreaming.

Bank Fees – Theft or Maintenance

image

As soon as Princess got a job, I took her to open a checking and savings account. What a great way to teach money management, I thought.

Conversation yesterday:

Princess:  “Mom, I was checking my account and they took $5 out my savings.  Why did they take my money?”

Me:  “I’ll check on it.  Probably since you turned 18 they changed your type of account.”

Verifies what happened.  Yep, the bank did in fact change her savings from a free account to charging a maintenance fee.

Me:  (calls back to explain the way banking works.)

Princess:  “But they are taking $5 a month.  That’s 60 dollars a year.  I work hard for that money.”

Me:  “Yes, I know but that is their maintenance fee.”

Princess:  “Maintenance for what?  I didn’t ask them to do anything.”

Lesson learned.

Note:  You know she closed that account, right?  Princess is serious about her money.

Merry Christmas 2013

I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday with family and friends.  Christmas is always special in my house because it is the Hubby and Princess’ birthday.  That means birthday cake, ya’ll.

Merry Christmas!

Favorite Child – Do You Have One?

favorite things

Today my daughter’s,  Princess and Diva, had an argument over who was the favorite.

Princess: “I’m the favorite. Mom knows she likes me the best. ”

Diva: “No she doesn’t.  I’m the favorite.”

Princess: “She’s known me longer.  I have to be the favorite.  It’s okay to admit it, Mom.”

Me: “I don’t have a favorite.  I love you both the same.”

They went back to eating cereal and all was well for the moment.  But I was left with a thought.  Do you have a favorite Child and is it okay to every admit it?

I think as a parent you love your children equally. You just like different things about them.

As for the favorite argument, I think I am the only winner. They only have one mom. I know that I am their favorite.

Planning a Murder at the Gym

If anyone has ever taken a Pilates class, you know that it is the quietest workout you can do.  The lights are dim, the music is soft and the movements are slow.  It was in class that I got the following opening line:

“It was in Pilates class that Sheila realized what she had to do. She would have to kill him.”

I left class and the thought stayed with me.  Who is Sheila? What is her life like? Who is she thinking of killing and why?  I don’t know where this character came from.  I have a novel in progress and three short stories and none of them involve a Sheila.

Soemtimes the best plot points or character flaws are revealed in the shower or during the afternoon commute.  Now I can add pilates class to that mix.  I go back to class tomorrow.  Maybe I will find out what else Sheila has been up to.

To my writer friends, have you ever been hit with inspiration while doing a mundane tasks?

Back to School – Let’s Get It Started

Back to it .........

It’s that time of year again.  Time to get those kids out of the house and back into the classroom.  Parents everywhere, rejoice.

This year is special for me because I have a Senior and a Freshman in high school this year.  Two  milestone moments.  A beginning and an end.

This should be fun!

Vacations are Fun……The Week After Vacation is Brutal

IMG00026-20100705-1753

Hubby and I spent the Fourth of July week in Vegas.  We walked up and down the Strip in 120 degree weather.  We took a chance in various casinos.  We went shopping at the outlet.  We took in the Michael Jackson One Cirque Du Soleil show (Seriously, go see this show.  It is so good!).  We watched the Hitsville show at Planet Hollywood.  We even got drunk one night in the Paris hotel.  We enjoyed several excellent meals.  In short, we had fun.

The next week I returned to the real world.  And I was miserable.  Work was piled up on my desk.  I actually had to get up before noon.  The daily routine was back in effect.  It was a struggle but somehow I made it through the week after vacation.

I hope this week is better.

What are your vacation plans this year?  Have you gone somewhere only to return to the “real” world of work?
