New Release Alert – DNA by J.L. Campbell

What can go wrong when an ambitious man accepts a promotion overseas without consulting his wife?

Much more than Russell Majors anticipates.

With a thriving career, a comfortable home, and two healthy sons, this new chapter is an unwelcome surprise for Amoy Majors.

A move abroad means physical exams, biometric screenings, and embassy interviews. All normal requirements, or they would be, if she didn’t believe they might stir a hornet’s nest.

When an unauthorized test yields unexpected results, the pillars on which her life is built are shaken.

Whether her marriage will survive a shocking revelation, and her faith withstand a trial by fire, is anyone’s guess.

***DNA is inspirational fiction with a focus on marriage.

Wednesday Writing Tip – Research the Craft

In order to craft a story, you need to learn the structure of storytelling. Here are some resources that I recommend:

These books are the ones I turn to when I need a refresher on any matter when crafting my stories.

Most of us know the basic of telling a story. You need an opening hook, a middle and then the climax. The trick is how to mold the story to engage the reader. It pays to read craft books to get a greater understanding.

Another very important thing to do is read books in the genre you want to write in. Read, read, read. And then write your story.

Thursday Musical Throwback – Al B. Sure!

(This is a new series of post where I share the music that I grew up listening to.)
(This is a new series of post where I share the music that I grew up listening to.)

Every generation thinks the music of their youth is better than what’s being played today.  In my case, it is actually true.  Let me present, Al B. Sure!

Albert Jason Brown III, who performed under the stage name, Al B.Sure!, turned down a college athletic scholarship to pursue a music career.  He first came to the attention of Quincy Jones by winning the Sony Innovators Star Search.  In 1988, he released his debut album “In Effect Mode.”  It went on to sell over two million copies.

Here are some of my favorites.

“Nite and Day”

“Misunderstanding”

“Off On Your Own”

“Killing Me Softly”

Enjoy!

Wednesday Writing Tip

The great Toni Morrison once said, “If there is a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, you must be the one to write it.”

Write your story. Worry about selling/marketing it later.

Cadence’s husband, Jackson Goldsmith, is not on board with his wife testifying. Not only is their safety at stake, but the welfare of their daughter, Jackie, who, through years of therapy, overcame the nightmare that Lester inflicted on her young life. Jackson’s holding onto the promise that the trial will be over in enough time for them to return to Germany before the baby’s born. Writing Tip Wednesday – What’s In a Name?

Photo by Jon Tyson on Unsplash

Katniss Everdeen. Luke Skywalker. Olivia Pope. Neo. Annalise Keating. Axl Foley.

All character names that immediately conjure the image in your mind.

Something I spend a lot of time on is naming my characters. Typically, a character comes to me fully formed physically, and I know their significant issues. What I don’t know is their name?

In my book, Moment of Truth, one of the main characters is named Logan Charles Rutherford, II. He is the son of a prominent local attorney, and I needed his name to reflect that sort of heritage.

When it comes to naming your character you must be cognizant of the time period, region of the country, and ethnicity. Think of the world your character inhibits and name them accordingly. A nineteen year old is present day would have a different name from a teenager born in the 60’s.

What are some of your favorite character names and why?

What I’m Reading This Week – Freefall by Jessica Barry

Want to know what I’m reading? Let me tell you about it.

Freefall synopsis:

They say your daughter is dead.

You know they’re wrong.

When her fiancé’s private plane crashes in the Colorado Rockies, everyone assumes Allison Carpenter is dead.

But Maggie, Allison’s mother back home in Owl Creek, Maine, refuses to believe them. Maggie knows her daughter – or she used to, anyway. For the past two years, the two women have been estranged, and while Maggie doesn’t know anything about Ally’s life now – not even why she was on a private plane to begin with – she still believes in her girl’s strength, and in their love for each other.

As Allison struggles across the treacherous mountain wilderness, Maggie embarks on a desperate search for answers about the world Allison has been involved in. What was she running from? And can Maggie uncover the truth in time to save her?

Told from the perspectives of a mother and daughter separated by distance but united by an unbreakable bond, Freefall is a heart-stopping, propulsive thriller about two tenacious women overcoming unimaginable obstacles to protect themselves and the ones they love.

I was drawn into this story from the beginning. The cat and mouse thriller is my favorite type of book to read. Told in alternating viewpoints between mother and daughter makes both characters authentic and fully formed. This was a page turner that read like a movie.

Musical Look Back – New Edition

(This is a series of post where I share the music that I grew up listening to.)

Every generation thinks the music of their youth is better than what’s being played today.  In my case, it is actually true.  Let me present, New Edition.

New Edition is an R & B group that was formed in Boston in 1978.  The group consisted of members Ronnie DeVoe, Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, and Ricky Bell.  They have been called the originators of the boy band movement that began in the ’80s and ’90s.  Their debut album, “Candy Girl” was released in 1983.

I remember hearing and seeing this group for the first time.  When “Candy Girl” came on the radio it felt like they were singing to me.  My 14-year-old self fell in love.  My best friend, Elaine, and I spent hours perfecting dance steps and singing along.  We each picked a favorite as our “boyfriend”.  I chose Ronnie.  Elaine picked Ralph.  I saved my lunch money to buy any teen magazine that had them on the cover.  I begged for every album until I got a part-time job and could buy them myself.

New Edition and I grew up together.  I was there when Bobby left the group in 1985.  I hung in there when Johnny Gill joined the guys in 1988.  I supported each of the member’s side projects (BBD (Poison), Bobby (Don’t Be Cruel), and Ralph “Mr. Sensitivity”).  I could never get that excited about Johnny although “My, My, My” was a jam.  I know some people loved him but I never could.

So here is a musical shout out to the boys from Boston.  They captured teen hearts everywhere.  And my adult self still has a soft spot for their music.

Where it all began – “Candy Girl”

“Mr. Telephone Man”

“Cool It Now”

“Count Me Out”

“If It Isn’t Love”- I can still do the steps to this one!

“Can You Stand the Rain”

“N.E. Heartbreak”

All grown up – “Still in Love”

“Hit Me Off”

BONUS:  I’ve seen them in concert three times and would go again!  Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph and Johnny too!

Enjoy!

When Hope is on Fire

Photo by Henry Be on Unsplash

You know what it is.

Another unarmed Black Man is killed by police while the world watches.

Another hashtag to add to an insanely long list.

When will it end?

When will systemic racism be burned down and this country truly live up to it’s creed that ‘all men are created equal’?

I’m tired, people. Tired of hoping and believing that the better side of humanity will do the right thing.

But still, I rise every day with the commitment to do my part, to speak out, to vote, to help those I encounter better themselves.

And all I’m left with is a silver of hope.
